“Soldier, 'Politician', Outcast: The Militaries and their Experiences in Argentina since the 1960s”

My thesis was selected as the best thesis on Spanish-speaking Latin America and nominated for the Hammond Prize by the Social Studies Department and the Hoopes Prize for outstanding and original research.

“Little research has been done on the Argentine military’s perspectives on the 1976-83 dictatorship and its aftermath. It is not a pleasant topic, and former military officers are notoriously difficult to talk to. Thus, there exists a huge gap in our knowledge about how the military itself viewed the 1976, the counter-insurgency, and the decades-long battle over human rights that followed it. Humberto’s thesis makes a major contribution in this area. It is difficult to overstate how difficult and exceptional Humberto’s research is.

…I consider this thesis research a truly impressive achievement and a serious contribution to scholarship on the Dirty War and on the Argentine military in generaI.

I learned much from this thesis. Indeed I cannot think of an undergraduate thesis I have learned more from.”

- Steven Levitsky, Professor of Government at Harvard University, co-author of “How Democracies Die”

“Humberto Juárez Rocha has written an excellent thesis on the experiences of Argentina’s military officers before, during, and after the Proceso de Reorganización Nacional, also known as the 1976-1983 ‘Dirty War'… [Rocha] sought out these men - some of them in their 80s, some under house arrest - and asked them to explain how they understood their mandate.

His goal is not to exonerate the armed forces, he warned the reader, but to hear their version of the story, their interpretation of events they lived through and their account of why they acted the way they did… The result is a fascinating and thoughtful paper, which should be read by anyone interested in Argentina's history and the region's military dictatorships.”
